Crossed Bucket Hat
By Tiffany Foots
I have had good luck with this pattern. You do not have to put in the special row of cross stitch if you are unfamiliar with the stitch, just continue single crocheting.
Basic Single Crochet hat w/ optinal brim. Shown above
I used a size J hook on peaches-n-cream or sugar-n-cream cotton yarn. This yarn is about $1.30 per ball. A childs hat will take 1 ball 1.5 for an adult with brim.
Row 1 - ch2, 6 sc in second from hook, join with slst to first sc. (mark w/stitch marker)
Row 2 - ch1, 2sc in each sc around join w/ slst (move stitch marker up)
Row 3 - ch1, 2sc in first sc, sc in next sc, repeat pattern around, join w/ slst (move marker)
Row 4- ch1, 2scin first sc, sc in next 2 sc, repeat pattern around, join w/ slst (move marker)
This is what your round will begin to look like. This is the peaches and cream cotton yarn.
Row 5- ch1, sc in each sc around, join w/ slst ( move marker)
Row 6- ch1, 2sc in first sc, sc in next 3 sc, repeat pattern around, join w/ slst (move marker)
Row 7- ch1, 2sc in first sc, sc in next 4 sc, repeat pattern around, join w/ slst (move marker)
Row 8- ch1, 2sc in first sc, sc in next 5 sc, repeat pattern around, join w/ slst (move marker) This is a good crown size for youth hats
Row 9- ch1, sc in each stitch around, join w/ slst (move marker)
Row 10- ch1, 2sc in first stitch, sc in next 6, repeat pattern around, join w/ slst ( move marker)
At this point your circle for the crown should measure 5 1/2" to 6" this size is good for adults. If you need a larger crown repeat row 10 one more time.
Row 11- ch1, sc in each sc around. continue until the end of ball of yarn. should be about 5" from marker.
Option 1 brim
(use your stitch marker to show when you complete 1 row)
row 1 - sc in front loops only each sc around.
row 2 - 2sc in first sc, sc in next 2, repeat around.
row 3 - 2sc in first sc, sc in next 4, repeat around.
row 4 - sc in each sc around. bind off w/ slst and finish. Weave in ends and enjoy.
Option 1 brim
(use your stitch marker to show when you complete 1 row)
row 1- sc in each sc around using double yarn or contrasting thicker yarn.
row 2 - 2sc in 1sc, 1sc in next sc repeat around.
row 3 - 1sc in each sc around. join w/ slst weave in ends and enjoy.
Anita used the above pattern to make these wonderful little hats for babies and preemies.
Preemie hats- this is what I have done. I use the same pattern as above the basic single crochet pattern. I use a smaller hook and a thinner yarn. Once you have the desired crown size, just stop working an increase row and continue the number of stitches until you have the right length for the sides. Then finish off your hat and weave in any ends. I usually do not add any brims to the small hats. See the head sizes above.
The adorable little hats pictured below useses the following pattern. These were made by Diane in Gainesville.
Knitting patterns
Lion Brand Yarns have lots of patterns for beginning knitters. I have listed some here with links
Bolero Tube Hat http://cache.lionbrand.com/patterns/50511.html. I knitted this pattern and mine came out way too big. If I had worked it in wool I could have washed it to shrink and felt. I will try it again with another yarn and less stitches. The pattern called to cast on 42 stitches, I might try it again with 28 or 30
Also working on a sewing pattern for fleece. I will add this pattern later.
