Art at the farm
Here are some folk art projects we can make at the studio. These classes are a little less structured and we make all kinds of projects - lamps, science lab, tie dye, home EC. sewing and baking. Class cost begins at $15.
Lets learn to Crochet- We will make a simple neck scarf or washcloth suitable for beginners. This makes up really quick. If you like it you may want to make one for someone else for a gift. Call me for the needle size and what type of yarn. You will learn 3 stitches in this scarf. See the calendar for times.
Neck Scarf Knitting- Learn how to do the basic knit stitch casting on and finishing. You will need size 15 or 17 knitting needles ( preferably plastic ) and 2 skeins of yarn. Please consult me before purchasing your yarn. Some yarns are easier for beginers.($15 each class)
This will take 2 class times Snowman pillow Faces - I love this idea. You can use it all winter to warm up a chilli mood. Using embrodiery stitches we will give this snowman face some major personality. Begin to collect buttons for the eyes. Four designs to choose from small to large. Finish this for winter decorations. See calendar for times listed.
Hand Sewing Fleece Pillow - Today we will begin sewing by hand on fleece material. I love this stuff so forgiving and so soft. The Kids will cut out their own design and begin to apply to pillow top. We will learn some embroidery stitches too.This class will take 2 days. ($15 each class)
Snowman cut out and ornament
We will be making a snowman or snowlady wooden cut out shape and an ornament for keeping. The boys enjoy this cute sewing project too. $25
Cooking with Cathy- Wow who really bakes biscuits anymore? I do. If you want to learn just come on and we will do this together. You can even make cinnamon biscuits. You need to bring your sifter and a medium size mixing bowl. $15 limited to 3 or 4
Coming soon another pajama pants class: We will be making a pair of pj bottoms for lounging around. You will learn basic sewing techniques including cutting out your pattern and reading pattern guides. We will sew on the regular machine and the serger. This class takes about 3 hours.Limited to 3. Supplies are needed. Contact Cathy. Cost $30
Counted Cross Stitch- We have cross stitched a monogram pillow top. Currently there are no plans to have another class but, If this is something you would like to learn just let me know and I will put it on the calendar. I have lots of new patterns to choose from.
Cross Stitch Bookmarks--- Learn to cross stitch these easy bookmarks.We will stamp the designs and add cross stitch to some of the color. Give one to someone as a gift. And make another at home with these simple designs.
Calligraphy 1 - These are my thoughts on calligraphy- I will take the first class to introduce the way to hold your pen and some practice alphabets. The students will have some home practice work to complete. By the end of class the students will be comfortable with this basic technique. I will let you know what supplies you will want to purchase for yourself. A true calligraphy artist takes years of practicing to master.
Calligraphy 2 - Second class we will apply what we have practiced and make ourselves a gift of monogramed stationary. You will need to purchase one set of blank stationary (paper and envelopes). I will have some practice sheets which we will use first to get our design perfect.

Felted Finger Puppets-I saw these made on Martha Stewart. They are adorable. I will try to get a sample made and a picture for yall to see. You can go to her site www.marthastewart.com and look at the video clip of her making them. Come make some for your favorite story. These are pumpkins.
Sock it Away--- Bring one sock and let's make a bank for stashing away the coins. Start your saving for a rainy day!!!or Christmas presents. You can find socks at the dollar store that are very colorful. And I have some to choose from.
Pumpkin or Cat Face- Celebrate the season with a pumpkin or halloween face. I will add a photo here later. Call me and let me know what to cut out for your child.
Let's start a cross stitch sampler of the Alphabet. I have 2 patterns to choose from these finish up to be 2.5" x 6" one has sheep one has rabbits.
A small design not too overwhelming for your kids. Boys like this too! Make one for a gift. I am sure this will take several weeks.
-- Sewing- Cherry pit warmers -- You select 1/4 yard of flannel in a pattern you like and we will sew on the sewing machine a cherry pit heating pad. Heat it in the Microwave, just the right amount of goodness for those aching muscles. A Great Christmas idea for anyone.
Snow men night lights- We had a great time with this last year and a great way to start out the new year. Please bring a colorful sock for your snowman or lady's hat. $15
Let's paint penguins for this cold and breezy month. All ages of children can try this painting project. The younger kids can try the simle painting while the older kids can try something from the Happy Feet movie. This drawing is from a Happy Feet book.
Rise & Shine-- folkart-- Decorate with this cheery good morning sign. A sleepy sun rise sunshine with a cheery rise and shine slogan. A great folkart project for anyone and maybe grumpy won't come around. Mom's you may want to do this one when the kids get back in school.
Mom & Dad plaques-Today we will be making a sign just for DAD or Mama!!! You can make your own message or copy mine. You are the best Dad or Mom in the World. Long after other presents are forgotten, the ones you made for parent may still be in use.
I Love You glitter hearts- a 8" wide x 12" high wooden shape painted bright red with my message or yours. We will also sew a small sachet filled with the wonderful smell of cinnamon buns. Sure to put a smile on everyone. Boys and girls love to learn the blanket stitch. Look under today's photos for more pictures of this class.
Cross Stitch for a Gift. I know some of your children enjoy cross stitching and would like to make a gift for someone special. We will work up a special I Love You. To be completed at home and suitable for framing. $15
Don't Worry Bee Happy - a happy little bee flitting around spreading cheer and a message
"Don't worry Bee Happy!" We will be using a 9 x 12 canvas so today's cost will be $14.00
Baby Chick- What comes first the chick or the egg? Baby chicks are shaped like eggs so we will explore the egg shape and shading. By concentrating on shading techniques we will build on necessary elements for creating realistic painting of a bird.
Sports Jersey Art School Spirit - We will be painting on a 16" x 20" canvas board to create some great art for your room. Use your soccer, baseball, football, even bicycling jerseys as your design. Or make up a new one for a new team or music group. You can add your name and number to your design to personalize for you or your friend. Today's cost will be $17.00
Angels among us--- Paint a lovely angel for today's painting project. Bring a picture or look at one of mine.
Open paint day - Paint any thing today - Finish up a previous painting or bring your idea and start fresh.
Tree Frogs- Frogs are so popular now. You can paint a realistic one or comical.
Water Color Note cards- Today we will be painting 4 note cards using water colors ( we will just be diluting acrylic paints) Butterflies will be the subject today. I will share some water color techniques to get you started in this exciting medium. I love watercolors come early and look through my watercolor journal. ($15.00)
Bottle Cap Flowers- Today we will be painting flowers with a bottle cap center. I call this recycle art. We paint on wooden boards from the cabinet shop and metal caps from glass bottles. The kids love making something out of nothing. Recycle art. Artist in New York call this found art. See the photo to the left.
Jazz Painting- Today we will explore contemporary jazz artist Stuart Davis. He painted large blocks of color separated by bold black lines. You could almost feel the music he was listening to. Lets try to paint the music.
Leapin' Lizards- We will paint colorful and tropical lizards today. Make yours match your room.
Best Buds- We will finish off summer with a portrait of you and a best friend. We will use a larger canvas (16 x 20 ) so there is a larger supply fee today ($7.50) This class will cost $17.50 please come by and see my sample.
Crazy Cup Cakes- A great way to start off the year! We will celebrate by painting a great cupcake complete with all the trimmings. This would be a great addition to your celebration decorations. And I do know other famous artists such as Andy Warhol has a whole series on desserts.
Funky fork and spoon- this is a favorite of the kids. We will be using Sculpty oven bake clay to cover the handles of forks and spoons. The kids should have and idea or can copy one of mine. We will also make a snowflake ornament. Then we will bake snow men cookies to enjoy while the clay projects are baking. $15
Make Snowmen for the Holidays-- folkart--. cold days should be getting closer. Let's celebrate in a fun cool way.Today we will create different snow men. Some small, some big. The samples I have made use a coke bottle and doll making techniques. Great decorations you can bring out when the air turns frosty.
Felted Ball pin cushion- Using dyed wool we will learn how the pioneers made felt for hats. We wil make a small ball to finish a pin cushion for Mom's or Grandma's sewing needles.
Fleece Neck Scarf with mittens - what a great way to keep up with your mittens- attach them to your scarf. This one will be friendly snowmen but there are lots of other ideas too. Photo to come later. I am working on this sample.
Freedom Flag- Let's show our spirit on the up coming holidays and display our flag. We will paint stripes and stars to create our very own flag. See the ladies below who came over the summer to paint one. Come one come all.
Zooming Sports Balls - You haven't any idea what this is.Well I want things to sound intresting to the boys too. I have cut out shapes of sports balls (baseballs, soccer balls and footballs) with trailing speed to look like its zooming on the ban saw and I will have the kids paint them however they like. Great for room decoration.
Beach Sand Handprints- This is kinda like the VBS handprints of our youth. We will make a handprint impression in a pie plate of sand and small shells. We will then pour in plaster to set.
Collage treasure box - Lets turn some cigar boxes into great collage art using bold colors and cut out magizine letters.
Gourd Birdhouses- We will decorate a plastic gourd birdhouse for our outdoor feathered friends who are building nests now.
Lady bug rocks & Beetle rocks- We will turn ordinary smooth round rocks into a parade of lady bugs of beetles. Perfect for your garden.
Mom & Me afternoon- Sculpey Sculptures- Moms and their little bitty kids can come and make something out of colored clay. Snakes, porcupine toothpick holders, beads, bears or a light switch cover. It will be fun.
Little Lady Pincushion- We will sew, paint and stuff a little lady pincushion today.
Marching Pink Flamingos or Smokey Bear showdown- Today we will be using walnut half shells as the body of our flamingos & bears. Let's march them off our board to a good time.
Folk Art Pointing Fingers-Folk Art Pointing Finger- If you haven't seen the new sign at the top of the driveway you don't know what this is. I have cut out shapes of pointing fingers on the ban saw and I will have the kids paint them however they like. Great for room decoration.

In October we will begin a study to "copy the masters" I will have samples of Art to copy on certain days.

Come make a Turkey Gourd Decoration
This fine turkey has a clay beak and a wool gobbler. Make one of these turkeys for your decorations.
Lollipop Turkey Decoration. Come and make a wonderful turkey decoration. Lollipops decorate the tail feathers. This is cut out of wood.
-- Painted tin Folk Art design-- Peace on Earth will be the topic today. Painted on a tin ceiling tile. Sample to come later. I picked up some of these old tin tiles from the flea market over the summer so-- let's paint a design for Christmas. Samples below.
3/14-Springtime Robins- Let's get ready for spring. You know it's just around the corner. Robins are some of the first birds I begin to see in my front yard. Today we will be painting these lovely red breasted birds.
Smokey Mountain Morning- come explore different shades of a limited color palatte. We will end up with a wonderful mountain range painting.
Make an Abstract collage painting. You can add shapes, letters, pictures. Be creative and let the juices flow. We will use a larger canvas today. Buy your own and bring it or purchase one from me. 18 x 24
We will paint a collage painting. Using a technique from artist Claudine Hellmuth we will use a black and white photo of ourselves and adding whimsical hand drawn elements to our artwork. I will add this sample to the web site soon. Still working on my sample. I still need some cigar boxes if anyone has some of these.
12/21 - USA Today- Here is another chance to paint a USA cut out shape. We had a great time with this project over the summer.
5/25 Nature Journaling---One of my favorite things to do during vacation is journaling with watercolor. Bring a spiral sketch book or watercolor pad. We will learn to combine typography with our simple line drawings. Record the events of your summer. Come and look through mine. A great way to practice and improve.

In the ladies painting sessions, You bring an idea and I move about the room helping and guiding each person. We meet for an hour each week for 3 weeks. You should be able to complete one project during this time. When we last met one person worked on a window, one painted a plate, and two worked in watercolor. You may also come if you want to begin to paint and have no clue what to do. I will start you with a project you can master. Call me if you have any questions about your project. 770-965-9013
Ladies want to Draw--- If you would like to draw in the mornings while the kids are in school. Please fill out the form below and I will be making a list of who can come on what day. Coordinating people and their schedules is my hardest chore. And I mean chore. No one seems to be able to come on the same day. I am not sure of the book we will be working from but, plan on improving your skills or if you have none plan on learning to shade and draw better.
We will use this book. Come look through mine.
